Billy Thrupp is a well-known identity around Waihi Beach for his plumbing skills, café hopping and his gregarious personality.

He is so much more than that; through his passionate interest in fly fishing. That is competitive fly fishing at a National and International level. Billy is currently in Slovakia representing New Zealand in the World Fly Fishing Championships. He would like to thank everyone who purchased a raffle ticket to help with the cost of getting him to the Championships.

Billy will keep us updated as the competition progresses below:

Billy on Arrival to Slovakia:

“Hey everyone.. I’ve made it safely to Slovakia 🇸🇰 The fishing has been amazing catching different species as well as the normal brown and rainbow trout.. I spent the first day fishing with my brother Cory Scott as we had talked a lot about seeing me catch my first grayling.. it didn’t disappoint such a beautiful fish…our guide has arrived and is putting us through our paces to what we need to do to be able to complete at a world level. His name is Luboš Roza, a really nice guy and an excellent fisherman being a world champion.. most venues have practice water which is where we are trying different techniques.. We are based in a small mountain town lipstosky mickulis..we have a few days left of practice and we move into the competition accommodation with all the other countries.. just a big thanks to everyone that’s helped me get over here.. as time goes by I’ll try keep you all up to date with what’s happening..tight lines”
