Jonti Batchelor’s journey to founding local business, Beach Pilates, is one of personal empowerment which saw her taking her health and wellbeing into her own hands, while discovering a new passion and career direction.

Beach Pilates is a reformer pilates studio, that opened at Waihi Beach in 2019 and has recently moved premises down to the north end. However, Jonti’s pilates story started several years earlier. Experiencing severe hip pain and discomfort, Jonti sought help

across various medical fields for a few years. But through more personal research and experimenting with different movement techniques, she discovered that she could resolve her issues. This developed into a keen interest in studying and practising pilates. Such was her passion, that Jonti bought three reformer pilates machines and taught pilates from the back of her house, in addition to working as a sales rep.

The satisfaction Jonti gained from helping people resolve their health issues physically as well as mentally, motivated her to relinquish her sales job and establish Beach Pilates.

The group classes at Beach Pilates are the perfect balance of group fitness and personal training. With only six reformers per class, the instructor is able to observe each client and offer modifications to suit. This means you receive achievable sessions at a lower price than if you were to attend private personal training.

The Reformer uses spring tension (rather than weights), to provide either resistance or assistance to an exercise depending on the needs of the client. This means classes can combine very strong clients who are looking for a challenge in the same class as new clients. The machine supports the body and gives direct feedback allowing the user to achieve a wide range of functional movements and target isolated muscle groups.

Currently the studio is running around 35 private and group classes per week, taught by Jonti and two other qualified instructors. The move to a larger space at the north end allows for new opportunities as the Beach Pilates timetable expands to include yoga, circuit classes and mat pilates.
