Fishing click here for coastguard information

Fishing is one of the main attractions at Waihi Beach - gathering tuatua in the shallows, surfcasting from the ocean beach and the rocky headlands or boat fishing, either inside the harbour or beyond the Bowentown entrance.

Best times for surfcasting are at the change of light and at night. Long set lines are used outside the harbour entrance and netting is done off the beach and inside the harbour the sides of channels can be good for kahawai and snapper. Fishing from the jetties at Tanners Point and Kauri Point can also produce a worthwhile catch. There are plenty of snapper, trevally, kahawai and John Dory tobe caught at the northern end of the harbour, most fishing can be done in water of 5m or less and night fishing can be rewarding in summer.
The bar itself is quite good fishing except in easterlies and fish can be caught most of the year on the sides of the bar - a good anchor is essential.
The closest reef fishing is at Steele's ask a local or use Way Point S37.24.994 El 76.00.621. Drifting from the bar half-way to Karewa Island can also produce snapper in summer, red gurnard in winter.

Bigger boats can head for Mayor Island 18 miles from Tanners Point but watch sea conditions as rough weather can make fora slow trip home. There are maps showing the main fishing spots.

Goldfields Railway Waihi

In 1980 the Goldfields Steam Train Society, as it was originally named was formed by a group of enthusiasts, to acquire the Waihi Station complex and the section of track between Waihi & Waikino. The objective of the group with this acquisition was to run a passenger service using heritage machinery, thus preserving this districts railway history for the enjoyment of future generations. With a name change in the mid Nineties to accommodate modern advertising trends, Goldfields Railway Incorporated now runs a successful time tabled passenger service over its 6:5km of track. The station complex at Waihi is the most complete (on the original site) in New Zealand. It contains the station, railway yards, goods shed, six railway houses and a number of other small ancillary buildings. The journey from Waihi and Waikino passes over farmland, through cuttings hewn from solid rock, crosses two rivers and the only private rail bridge over a state highway in New Zealand. The Waikino Station, originally the Paeroa Station was shifted to the site in 1990. It now contains the Waikino Station Café and acts as a terminus Linking Goldfields Railway to the walkway system and other attractions in the Karangahake Gorge.

Kayaking

The northern harbour (including Matakana Island) has secluded beaches to explore and plenty of sea birds. Look for the shag colony nesting 100m upstream from the Tanners Point Ramp. Occasionally there are orca pods in the main channel and you may be lucky enough to spot kingfish swimming together above a ray, or kahawai working in schools.

The harbour can cut up rough without much warning and beginners are advised to stay close inshore if the weather looks doubtful. The harbour entrance back to the Bowentown estuary and arcing across to Matakana Island is a no-go area except for experienced sea kayakers. There can also be whirlpools in the area out from Anzac Bay and a rip between Shelley and Anzac Bays.
